Innovative Charter School Will Open New Advanced Technology Learning Center in Belgium, WI

Rocket Academy, a tuition-free public charter high school for 11th and 12th grade students focusing on technical manufacturing and employability skills is celebrating the opening of their new advanced technology learning center on November 14th.

“Our staff, students and business partners are thrilled with the opening of the new advanced technology learning center in Belgium, WI. Our new lab space will allow the Rocket Academy to provide state of the art, hands-on learning opportunities in precision machining, welding fabrication, HVAC, and electro-mechanical technology,” commented Mike Dietrich, President of the Rocket Academy Governance Council.

Rachel M. Kroeplien, Dean of Applied Technology/Economic Development at Lakeshore College, commented how the dual-enrollment process provides high school students with industry certifications and/or college credits.

“Each of the Rocket Academy’s pathways directly reflects a degree diploma offered by Lakeshore College, giving students the opportunity to earn college credit now.” Kroeplien explained.

Rocket Academy students also participate in a youth apprenticeship (YA) program throughout the entire academic year with a local business. 

“The Youth Apprenticeship provides high school students with real world skills, and socializes them into the culture of work.”Rocket Academy Director David Friend commented.

“Between the experiences of learning at Lakeshore College, observing different skills through our manufacturing facility site visits, and their hands-on YA - our students are set up for success."

Friend added that the Cedar Grove-Belgium School District is proud to be the authorizer for Rocket Academy.

"We are happy to be a key partner for a school where students can thrive with a competency-based model of learning,” commented Cedar-Grove-Belgium District Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Freeman. " This partnership gives our students opportunities in technical manufacturing jobs, which are in high demand, while simultaneously learning employability skills and earning college credit. It's a win-win for everybody."
