Information about Thiensville and the Milwaukee River:

The Thiensville Village Park and the surrounding Milwaukee River are a great place for a walk, a concert, a hike, fun activities and more.

Its past history indicates that Thiensville was the site of a Potawatomi village in the early 19th century before white settlers began arriving in the 1830s and 1840s.

Settlers were German immigrants who were members of freethinker societies. One prominent freethinker was Joachim Heinrich Thien, for whom the village is named. Thien played a significant role in the Town of Mequon's early politics and organized the Thiensville Volunteer Fire Department.

The freethinkers were opposed to organized religion and actively prevented churches from being established in the community for the first eight decades of its history.

In 1842 Jochim Heinrich Thien settled in the area and bought 148 acres, built a mill and thus Thiensville was born.

The Village was officially incorporated in 1910, its settlement began in the 1840s and has developed into a picturesque community adjacent to the Milwaukee River.
